Sorrento, Italy - Travel guide

Located in Campania, Southern Italy, Sorrento is a town characterized by beautiful architecture and many restaurants and cafes as well as shops that mainly cater to tourists. Sorrento is conveniently accessed from Naples as it lies along Circumvesuviana rail system and it is a perfect base while visiting Ercolano and Pompeii. There are regular ferries which commute between Capri and Sorrento thus making the town the most ideal based when exploring the island. 



If you want to fly in to Sorrento, you will use the Naples Airport and the complete the rest of your journey to the town by bus. A typical trip to Sorrento town is full of many exciting possibilities. You will enjoy walking via the lively streets at night, have an enjoyable day exploring Pompeii ruins or spend some time at Naples Bay. 




From Sorrento, you can also organize a short travel to Naples where you will visit the National Museum where some of the best art work and frescoes from Pompeii are housed. If you are not in great hurry, the best way to explore Sorrento is by walking and possibly even visits the beach and harbor where more fun awaits you. Alternatively, you can opt to use the local bus services to visit numerous interesting places that aren’t easily reachable on food. Make sure you stop by Punta Campanella natural reserve, the lemon terraces and the pretty and well known Small Port. 




Villa Pollio are roman ruins found at Capo di Sorrento are worthy a visit as well as Archeological Museum of Sorrentine Peninsula, Museo Correale di Terranova which is Sorrento’s picture gallery. Hotel Tramontano is a popular place in Sorrento as it is where Henrik Ibsen, a Norwegian writer live in 1867 and 1881 while writing the Peer Gynt and Ghosts respectively. A large collection of arts made by locals is to be found at Museo Bottega della Tasia Lignea. Other attractive areas are Duomo cathedral, Basilica di Sant’Antonio and St. Francis Monastery. While there are not so many attractions in Sorrento as such, you can expect that your two/ three day trip will remain considerably busy and enjoyable. 





Most tourists will also opt to hire a charter boat and enjoy a trip to Sorrento coast and island of Ischia which is an emerging tourist destination in Italy. Swimming at Marina Piccolo which is a public beach in Sorrento is a perfect way to spend a hot afternoon in the cold waters. Biking has of late become a common activity in Sorrento as well and you can rent a bike in various rentals and probably ride all the way to the coast. 



Limoncello is a popular sourvenir in Sorrento and one of the things that you should of course look for while shopping in Sorrento. You will even find the lemon liqueur being made at Limonoro and it wouldn’t harm to get a taste of it. Some of the common things you can eat in Sorrento include Gnocchi alla Sorrentina, Pastiera and Parmigiana.
