A Day Out in Australia's Adelaide Hills

Located a short drive away from Adelaide's city centre, the Adelaide Hills are a popular day trip option for residents and tourists alike. Situated in the Mount Lofty Ranges, the Adelaide Hills are loosely centred on the largest settlement in the region, Mount Barker. This region has received acclaim in recent years for its wine production, thanks to its cool, Mediterranean climate and excellent soil. Yet there are plenty of attractions to enjoy beyond the wine-tasting tours, whether you want to learn more about the region's German heritage or take a trip back in time on a steam-powered train.

German Settlements

One of the Adelaide Hills's most iconic attractions is the town of Hahndorf. This is the oldest surviving German settlement in Australia, rich with history and culture. You can enjoy traditional German cheese, beer, and chocolate in a Bavarian setting, and learn more about Germans in Australia at the Hahndorf Museum. Hahndorf was also home to one of South Australia's most famous artists, Sir Hans Heysen. You can visit his studio, "The Cedars," and admire the same landscapes that gave him inspiration. Guided tours are available to explore the surrounding land and learn more about his life and art.

Family Attractions

For a wholesome family day out, there are numerous attractions for all ages. Children will enjoy feeding and cuddling the animals at the Hahndorf Farm Barn, or going berry-picking at Beerenberg Farm. Wildlife attractions include the Gorge Wildlife Park, which is home to native species such as koalas, echidnas, and kangaroos. A family trip to Adelaide Hills wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Gumeracha's Toy Factory, home to the world's biggest rocking horse and a staggering amount of toys.

Car buffs of all ages will enjoy visiting the National Motor Museum in Birdwood, which teaches visitors about the history of the automobile. To take the transportation theme a bit further, the family will enjoy a ride on the traditional steam engine, the "Steam Ranger." The Steam Ranger travels from Mount Barker to Victor Harbour, with world class sights and the chance to hop on and off for a pub lunch at one of the quaint villages along the way.

Roadside Sights

You don't need to have a particular destination in mind, as one of the greatest pleasures of visiting this region is simply driving around and enjoying the picturesque houses and panoramic vista points. Some of Australia's most impressive properties are located in the Adelaide Hills. Those looking at real estate Adelaide with Homesales.com.au will feel inspired by grand old manors like Auchendarroch House in Mount Barker. This impressive work of architecture dates back to 1878 and has been beautifully restored to its former glory. If you're visiting Adelaide Hills during the holiday season, you can drive through the town of Lobethal in December and enjoy the largest community Christmas lights display in Australia.

Whether you're interested in enjoying the gourmet cheese, chocolate, and wine produced in Adelaide Hills or simply tour around admiring the views, you'll find plenty to see and do. Stop off at Mount Lofty Summit for remarkable views over Adelaide, and you'll have enjoyed a full day in the countryside.
