Angel Falls in Venezuela - Highest Waterfall in the World

The Angel Falls, also known as Salto Angel and Kerepakupai Vena, is considered to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. It is nearly one kilometer tall and is regarded as the world's highest uninterrupted waterfall. Located in the Canaima National Park in Venezuela, the waterfall drops over the edge of the Auyantepui mountain.

The world’s highest waterfall at 979 meters (3,212 feet), the water that comes over the top of the mountain falls for 807 meters (2,648 feet) before plunging into the river below. The height of the falls is so great that by the time it reaches the ground it becomes tiny particles that turns into fog. The Angel Falls are on the Gauja River, alternatively known as the Kerep River or Kerepacupai, which flows into the Churun River.

The Angel Falls were not known to the outside world until American aviator Jimmie Angel flew over them on 16 November 1933 on a flight while he was searching for a valuable ore bed. He returned on 9 October 1937 and tried to land his Flamingo monoplane atop the mountain. Accidentally the plane was damaged as the wheels sank into the marshy ground and Angel had to descend the mountain on foot along with his three companions. It took them 11 days to make their way back into the civilization and the news of their adventure spread over. Later, the waterfall was named Angel Falls in his honor.

The Angel Falls is not the only waterfall in this region. There are some other beautiful waterfalls here and they are among the highest waterfalls in the world. The Angel Falls is just one of the waterfalls but it's almost a kilometer tall and this attribute gives Angel the status of being "the highest waterfall in the world."
