Ever since the 1960s, the Algarve in Portugal has been drawing tourists form all over Europe who are looking for a place that has beautiful sandy beaches, but also offers plenty of things to do while you’re there – when you’ve had enough of lazing on the beach or by the pool.
Most holidaymakers fly into Faro and then take a transfer coach or taxi directly to their destination, but if you have your own transport, then it’s worth making the time to visit the city of Faro at some point during the holiday.
The resort of Albufeira is also a great place to stay, as there are some great beaches around there but the town itself has many charms to entertain its visitors. The streets are narrow and cobbled and the architecture is traditional. Many of the buildings are colorful, especially around the marina.
The old town is a great place to wander around, and there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants whichever direction you take. There are some Roman castle remains to explore, although the castle was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. The clock tower – Torre do Relogio – was built on the old castle tower and is a city landmark that is lit up for special occasions. For those looking for the clubs and bars, head to São João.

There are lots of activities aimed at families, including dolphin cruises, jeep safaris through the Algarve countryside and tourist attractions like Aqualand Algarve – the biggest water park in Portugal.
The Algarve is a perfect holiday destination in many ways. With beautiful scenery yet plenty of things to do there, you can’t go wrong.
