Chamarel Seven Colored Earths - An Amazing Geological Formation in Mauritius

Seven Colored Earths (also known as Chamarel Colored Earths) is an amazing geological formation found in the Chamarel plain in southwestern Mauritius. It is a small area, of about 7,500 square meters, of sand dunes comprising sand of seven distinct colors. This place of geological curiosity has become a major tourist attraction of Mauritius since the 1960s. The dunes at Seven Colored Earths of Chamarel are protected by a wooden fence and visitors are not allowed to climb on them. However, there are observation outposts placed along the fence and one can look at the scenery from there.

One of the most interesting features of Chamarel Seven Colored Earths is that the dunes acquire a surrealistic striped coloring as these differently colored sands spontaneously settle in different layers. Even a handful of sands of different colors shows the same phenomenon by separating eventually into a layered spectrum. Another fascinating feature of the place is that the dunes seemingly never erode, in spite of Mauritius' torrential, tropical rains. Source: Wikipedia
