Amazing Underwater Forest in Kaindy Lake, Kazakhstan

Located about 130 kilometers from the city of Almaty, in Kazakhstan's portion of the Tian Shan Mountains, Kaindy Lake is an amazing lake. The lake is famous for the submerged forest that went underwater over 100 years ago. The imposing trunks of spruce trees that rises out of the lake water adds to the scenic beauty of the Kaindy Lake. It is an almost surreal landscape, especially in times of fog or snow, and is considered to be a photography enthusiast's dream destination.

The 400 meter long lake was created after an earthquake in 1911 that triggered a large landslide blocking the gorge and forming a natural dam. Rainwater filled the valley in course of time and the unusual lake was created. The water in Kaindy Lake is extremely cold and does not exceed 6 degrees even in summer. As a result, the great pines still remain on the trees even over 100 years later. The water in the lake is crystal clear and one can easily see into the depths of the lake. Lake Kaindy becomes a great spot for trout fishing and ice diving in winter when the surface of the lake freezes over.
