One of the best ways to get the most out of the Czech countryside is on a bike. It’s easy to rent bikes from the quaint guesthouses that are dotted around the country. There are safe cycle trails marked out around the countryside which will take you through magnificent pine forests, past pretty lakes and rivers (perfect for taking a refreshing dip) or, if you’re feeling strong, up and over the mountains.
Moravia is one of the more popular regions to visit in the Czech Republic. The top attractions in this beautiful region include the impressive Blankso Caves, perfect for a day trip. There’s also excellent examples of the Gothic architecture for which the Czech Republic is famed for, including the 13th century Porta Coeli Monastery and the spooky Sedlac Ossuary – decorated with chandeliers, walls, bells and crests made entirely from human bones.
Other attractions in Moravia include the Zdar Peaks, popular with hikers and walkers as they give some of the most breath-taking views of the region. The countryside also has remarkable buildings to explore such as the Baroque church, Zdar nad Sazavou, a listed World Heritage Site.
Moravia is also a great destination if you’re a sports fan. The Grand Prix of the Czech Republic is hosted in the Brno circuit and attracts a great international racing crowd.
Prague, Capital City of Czech Republic
Prague is the jewel in the Czech Republic’s crown. This vibrant city has become a popular destination for romantic couple’s breaks and lively group holidays, due to Prague’s famous nightlife and its wealth of historic and cultural attractions.
If you’re in Prague for a weekend break, stick to the central districts, Hradcany, Mala Strana, New Town and Old Town. In these areas you’ll find the most popular and iconic landmarks, the best pubs and bars and a great choice of Prague hotels.
In Hradcany district you’ll find the incredible Prague Castle complex, also known as simply ‘Hrad’ to Prague locals. Tickets to the castle are valid for two days which gives you time to revisit the castle on a weekend break – great as there’s so much to see! Don’t miss out on the St Vitus Cathedral, Golden Lane, St George’s Basilica or the Toy Museum when visiting the castle grounds.
Mala Strana District is one of the most popular and busy areas of Prague. Here can visit the famous Charles Bridge and beautiful Church of St Nicholas – easily spotted by its green dome. Malta Strana is also home to Petrin Hill which has lots of fun attractions including a mirror maze and Funicular Railway.
Prague’s Old Town is the best place for discovering charming cobbled streets, alleys and narrow lanes. The best way to explore this area is to get lost in this maze of winding streets. This way you’re bound to find a traditional pub that serves hearty Czech fare and local beers, one of Prague’s famous museums such as the Museum of Decorative Arts, or one of the landmarks such as fantastical Astronomical Clock.
The New Town in Prague was actually founded in 1348! Here you’ll find the popular Wenceslas Square which has lots of tourist-friendly restaurants and bars. In New Town you can see more excellent museums including the National Museum, or enjoy a late night out at the National Theatre or State Opera. If you prefer to explore Prague’s notorious nightlife scene, check out the Lucerna or Duplex nightclubs in New Town.
Whether you want to spend time in the fresh air and getting back to nature, or prefer the atmosphere of a vibrant, historic city, the Czech Republic is a great destination for an unforgettable trip away.
