Kefalonia (Cephalonia), Greece - Travel Guide

Kefalonia is one of Greece’s renowned tourist destinations. It is an island of the Ionian group of Islands located west of Greece’s mainland. This island is in the Ionian Sea territory and its capital is Argostoli. Kefalonia has a long period of human inhabitance. The island has been inhabited from as far as twenty two thousand years ago during the pre-historic period as proved by the archaeological museum exhibits mined from various archaeological sites in Cephalonia Island. 

Cephalonia Islands has since been under the governance of many states down the line from the Romans, Byzantines, the Franks, Normans, the Turkish, the Venetians, to the French colonization: all undergoing several battles in the island so as to acquire the island. Cephalonia is currently a Greek territory after being annexed to Greece in 1864. Cephalonia Island has varieties of beautiful natural features waiting to be seen, and historic sites and facts to be witnessed by the world. 

With many bays, coastal beaches, giant natural features and sites of history of the island, Kefalonia Island is a destination worth to be visited. First to start over with the inland features, the nature trip to the Mount Ainos reveals a rare species of forest known as the fir forest. There is also a national park at the mountain where you can view wild animal species commonly living in the island. Travel to the north and west sides of the island and see the long Elios-Pronni Peninsula and Palikis Peninsula respectively with several beaches along them. 

Visit the Drogarati cave near Sami village at the east coast of Cephalonia and Lake Melissani inside the cave. This cave was discovered in the seventeenth century and is named after one of the Nymphs, Melissani, found in the cave. The Mirtos, Athera, Lourdata and Kateleiou Bays are beautiful spots to enjoy power boat riding. Tour in the museums of the island; 

The Archaeological Museum shows much of the pre-historic elements such as the ancient coins, swords and various sculptures discovered in the island. The Corgialenion Historical and Fork Art Museum presents the history of the island from as far back as from the fifteenth century when creative art was practiced. The northern beaches and southern beaches of the island are different in that the northern beaches are majorly covered with pebbles whereas the southern beaches are sandy.

Enjoy surfing, diving and boat-riding along the blue elegant waters of the Ionian Sea. Snorkeling facilities can be brought to enable tourists get a close glimpse f the magnificent sea living creatures and vegetation underneath. Participate in sightseeing tours to the nineteenth century stone bridge, the Melissani Lake Cave and the nineteenth century Saint Theodoroi Light house north of Argostoli. Accommodation is readily available with exotic beach resorts and hotels.
