Corfu Island, Greece - Travel Guide and Travel Info

Corfu is an island that lies in the Ionian Sea, at the entrance to the Adratic Sea, close to Greece’s north-western shore. It is one of the Seven Islands, or the Eptanisa, and is their second largest one. It has rich vegetation, having over three million olive trees, and it is very green, especially during the warmer months. An island of miracles and wonders, it is a fusion of natural beauty, traditional features and archaeological sites.

The town of Corfu, or Kerkyra, situated in the centre of the island, is quite an impressive and charming town. It attracts many visitors with its many lovely sights: the two forts, its tall houses that have balconies with beautiful wrought-iron fences, the arcades, narrow streets, the Venetian-built Town Hall, the St. Spyridon Church (Corfu’s patron saint), the numerous flower-filled gardens… All these wonderful places make Corfu a veritable small paradise on Earth.

Other than the flower fields all over the countryside and the villages built in typical Adriatic fashion, there is the fantastic coastal scenery. Corfu’s coast, from Paleokastritsa to Kanoni and from the Achillion to Pontikonissi is packed with marvelous coves with crystal clear sea water and green vegetation that simply flows into the deep blue sea. The many secluded beaches are peaceful, calming and heavenly. But, Corfu doesn’t offer only relaxation; it also has a full nightlife with stunning possibilities.

During the summer months, at the height of the season, flights land daily from all around Europe at the airport just south of Corfu Town. The airport is used by many low cost airlines, as well as major tour operators. There are many resorts located all over the island that offer accommodation of every type—villas, apartments, studios, rooms—all built with the utmost respect for the environment.

Most facilities are fully-equipped, with parking-areas, verandas, gardens and spectacular views of the Ionian Sea. They often offer rental cars, motorbikes, bicycles and taxi service. Visitors have the chance to get away from the usual vacation idea, and instead enjoy a true escape from everyday life, with comfortable accommodation in natural scenery.

Corfu is a travel destination that attracts tourists from all over the world and exceeds the expectations of even the most demanding ones. Those that have opted for a holiday on this very interesting island had better prepare themselves for an experience unlike any other.
