Okavango Delta in Botswana - The Jewel of the Kalahari.

The Okavango Delta, in Botswana, is a large inland delta in the midst of the Kalhan sands. It is Africa's largest and most beautiful oasis. It is Botswana's most popular destination for safari holidays. The Okavango Delta is one of the largest inland deltas in the world. It is also one of the most sought after wilderness destinations in the world. The Okavango Delta is widely believed to be the world's largest inland delta, though it is not.

The Okavango Delta is a unique wetland system in the heart of the dry Kalahari Desert. It is situated deep within the Kalahari Basin where the Okavango River reaches a tectonic trough in the central part of the endorheic basin of the Kalahari. The delta is often referred to as the jewel of the Kalahari. The Okavango Delta gives entrance to the spectacle of wild Africa.

When seen from the air the scenery of a mosaic of land and water below in the delta look like a perfectly constructed puzzle. But it is down on the tranquil waterways that you will discover the scenic beauty of the papyrus fringed islands. A journey deep into Africa’s untouched interior, the Okavango Delta, can just be an amazing experience. Cruising through the maze-like channels of the Delta in a traditional boat, exploring the lily covered lagoons and palm fringed islands - is like no other.

The Okavango Delta is a natural refuge and giant water hole for the larger animals of the Kalahari. The water gives rise to many forms of life unexpected in a desert. There are fish, crocodiles basking on the sands, and hippopotamuses and swamp antelopes feeding on the vegetation. The Delta is home to many species of antelope, such as Lechwe and Tsessebe.
