A Lake-side Gelato at Lake Como

Lake Como is a lake that twists between spectacular mountain scenery of the Lombardy region of Northern Italy. Lago di Como, as it's known in Italian, always impresses visitors with natural beauty and a history that dates back to Roman times and possibly even earlier. Como is at the southern end of the lake and is a great place to begin an exploration, with elegant and well-appointed resorts nestled amongst towering snow-capped mountains. From here why not take a boat trip to the tourist towns of Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio? These distinctive places are full of enticing family-run eateries, places to buy souvenirs and cafes where you can watch the world go by and relax with a cup of coffee.

There is a hillside railway or funicular, that allows visitors to savour magnificent views of Como below and the Swiss Alps in the distance. On top of this mountain, strangely enough, is a lighthouse called Volta Lighthouse. This was built in honour of Alessandro Volta, an Italian physicist who invented the battery. Make sure you pack your walking boots and enjoy a moderate level hike at the top of the mountain ridge between Como and Bellagio, with splendid alpine views and plenty of inns to stop and enjoy delicious Italian food.

There are opportunities to enjoy tennis and golf at both the Villa D'Este or Monticello Golf Club. If cruising along the water is more appealing, then you can always rent low horse-power boats, go kite surfing, sailing and water skiing.

For the more culturally minded the Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo has a stunning vista of the lake as its foreground and is home to a variety of exotic plants in its gardens. There is also a museum containing sculptures and artworks from various eras.

Another reason to come to Lake Como is the selection of Gelaterias in many towns selling lovingly-made, family recipes of gelato. Each of them is a revelation of texture and flavor and will go down a treat for travellers of all ages.
